Restoring a 1981 Pre-Production Audi Quattro

It’s the start of a new beginning for this 1980/1 Pre-Production Audi Quattro which has arrived at our workshops for a full concours standard restoration. This Audi Quattro is one of the first high-performance vehicles to use full-time all-wheel drive, which was inspired by the Volkswagen Iltis, a military vehicle with great traction in off-road conditions. This 1981 Pre-Production Audi Quattro is only one of 100 early pre-production Quattros, which are sometimes called pre-series cars. These cars were hand-assembled close to production specifications which were used for press demonstrations, dealer training, internal use and Homologation documentation.

The Audi Quattro houses a 2.1L Inline-5 engine, going from 0-62 mph in 7.1 seconds, reaching a top speed of 137mph. The Audi Quattro also has a K26 turbocharger, a Bosch K-Jetronic mechanical fuel injection and a ZF 5-speed manual gearbox. There are a few small differences between the pre-production series compared to standard Audi Quattro including a slightly different trim, different ECU mapping or experimental fuel systems, non-standard bodywork and no undercoating or rustproofing (depending on test use), however, they remain very close to production specifications.

This 1981 Pre-Production Audi Quattro has come into the workshops for a full restoration in conjunction with Audi Germany's original factory specifications. We will be working in partnership with Audi Germany on this exciting project. This concours standard restoration includes engine and fuel injection, turbo, steering, suspension, brakes, interior, gearbox, metalwork and trim! Our expert team of technicians will undertake the restoration process in-house utilising the skills acquired over decades of experience in the trade. The restoration process is well documented from start to finish through our project management software and the owner receives daily progress updates.
